Man arrested for throwing burning stove on wife

Another horror story. From PM News
A middle-aged man identified as Oladimeji Fowowe has been arrested by the police at Iju police station Station Red House, Lagos, for allegedly setting his wife on fire, when he threw a burning stove and hot water on her.
The suspect, who trailed his wife to Ijoko in Ogun State, southwest Nigeria where she had gone to assist her husband’s younger brother’s wife who had just put to bed a set of twins, was alleged to have committed the crime when his wife returned to Iju area of Ishaga, Lagos State from Ijoko
Speaking with P.M.NEWS on her hospital bed at Ogba, Lagos State, the victim, Mrs. Oluwakemi Fowowe, said she left her husband and father of her three children, when his trouble and that of his mother became unbearable for her.

“I was at the passage facing outside not knowing that my husband had sneaked through the back door and the next thing I heard was a loud noise as he threw both the burning stove and a pot of hot water on me.

“My body caught fire and I ran outside, shouting for help before people assisted me in putting out the fire. I became unconscious before I was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors battled to revive me. I want all well-meaning Nigerians to come to my aid as I have no one to help me,’’she moaned in pains

Oladimeji was subsequently arrested and handed over to the police at Iju Police Station, where he was detained but he was later granted bail.

His wife’s family said he should not be sent to jail because of the three children his wife had for him. But he was advised to take care of the victim.
However, the wife’s family decided to press charges against him when he failed to honour his side of the agreement, to take care of the victim. He allegedly abandoned her in the hospital.

Oladimeji, who had earlier told the police that his action was the handiwork of the devil, has gone underground to evade arrest. The victim is appealing to well-meaning Nigerians to come to her aid as she requires about N400,000 for the treatment of the burns.

Watch ex-wives of Zaaki Adzay, Frank Edoho and other women share stories of domestic violence

In support of Peace One Day's Global Truce 2012 'Reducing Domestic Violence' Campaign and in celebration of Peace Day taking place on the 21st of September, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa is creating awareness of the human and emotional cost of domestic violence by launching a short Eliminate Domestic Violence documentary which voices the experiences of gender-based violence victims.

Given that over 50% of Nigerian women are abused by their husbands, this video represents a call for the complete eradication of gender-based violence and a milestone in the campaign to amplify public awareness of domestic violence and empower victims to voice their experiences without reproach. During the March 21st 2012 press launch of the Global Truce 2012 Campaign, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa Founder-President H.E Mrs. Toyin Saraki addressed both the problem of gender-based violence and its potential solutions. In keeping with its pledge to mobilize networks in support of Peace One Day's Global Truce 2012, the Wellbeing Foundation Africa has implemented various initiatives including the Peace Summit in Ilorin which promoted harmony, tolerance and conflict resolution through dialogue; the Walk Against Rape in Lagos which encouraged rape victims to speak out; and the Peace Prayer Outreach in Kwara State which enriched the lives of those in need and advocated for understanding between religions. These efforts all served to promote peace, non-violence and solidarity within Nigeria and more importantly advanced the vision of Peace One Day.

Man Blinds His Wife By Stabbing Her In The Eye And Upon Arrest, Blames It On ‘Satan’

Deann Igho married Sylvester barely a year ago and hoped to have a good marriage. Their affairs had started when she was a student at the University of Port Harcourt. Their love affair blossomed, and they agreed to get married.
However, Deann’s parents, siblings and relatives objected to her marrying Sylvester. Along the line, she got pregnant for Sylvester and her family didn’t have any choice but to grant her wish. She moved in to live with Sylvester. Last year, she gave birth to a baby boy. Deann is Sylvester’s third wife.
First, the man married about five years ago, and the marriage crashed after producing a child. He married again, but his second wife did not give him a child before they parted ways. He then married Deann.
Deann Igho (L) Immediately After She Was Allegedly Stabbed By Her Husband & In Hospital (R) After Treatment
The fight
Sylvester returned home after being away for two weeks. A quarrel had ensued between him and the wife in the evening. To Deann, the matter was settled, but her husband did not want to let go. At night, Sylvester woke his wife from sleep and demanded that they talked. His wife told him that whatever discussion there was had to wait till the morning, to avoid waking the baby, who had cough and catarrh. In a fit of anger, Sylvester stabbed her twice in the eye, locked the door and escaped.
Since their home on Ada George Road, a developing part of Port Harcourt, is isolated, neighbours could not hear Deann’s cries. Writhing in pains and on the verge of bleeding to death, she managed to call her siblings in , on phone. She also called her parents and Sylvester’s parents, who also live in . She also, in pains, captured her bleeding face with her Blackberry phone camera and sent them to those she called.
Her family contacted their friends in Port Harcourt, Mr & Mrs. Castro, who broke the door and took her out. She was then taken to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) for medical attention.
Nero Igho, Deann’s brother, who was in  when he got the distress call, says he called Sylvester several times, but the latter refused to pick his call.
After initial treatment, Nero took his sister to police area command, where the matter was reported. She was, thereafter, transferred to  State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, where a team of three doctors confirmed that the eye was dead, after surgery. On his experience, Deann said: “Sylvester used a knife to remove one of my eyes and locked the door against me so that I will bleed to death.”
How Sylvester was arrested
After the attack, Sylvester moved over to Lagos and was lodging in a hotel. While in Lagos, he told those who called him on phone that he was in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The bubble burst when someone spotted him and told Deann’s family. Nero traced him to the hotel and fooled him into believing that there was no problem, as they saw the matter as one of trying times. He followed them home, where the police picked him up. The police said he would be transferred to Port Harcourt, where the crime was committed.
Sylvester’s plot to flee Nigeria
It was learnt that Sylvester actually planned to flee Nigeria, which was why he came to Lagos. He had made arrangements for an International passport, which he was waiting for before he was nabbed. While cooling off his heels at the Lagos state Police Command cell, Sylvester blamed Satan for his action. He denied stabbing his wife. According to him, the ceiling fan cut his wife’s eye.

Man rapes 8 children in Lagos

police in Ipaja-Ayobo area of Lagos State, southwest Nigeria have arrested a man who allegedly defiled eight children. He is now being detained, awaiting arraignment in court. The suspect, Mr. Temitope Alo was arrested on Saturday at Koloba area of Ayobo after the children allegedly confessed that he had raped them.
The eight victims, whose ages range from eight to 15 years were brought to the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, WAPA yesterday by the Vice Chairman, Ipaja-Ayobo Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Alhaja Falilat Ajijola to enable the state government to take over the case.
The victim said he works for a newspaper company (name withheld) in Lagos and allegedly lured the children to his apartment where he defiled them and threatened to kill them if they reported the matter.
Tests conducted on the eight children at the Ayobo-Ipaja Primary Health Centre, PHC, showed that the children had been defiled.
A top official of the WAPA Ministry told P.M.NEWS that the ministry had been handling rape cases but they had never recorded a case where a man serially raped eight children.
The news of the rape caused a stir at the WAPA ministry as the staff rained curses on the alleged rapist.
According to the Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA Vice Chairman, Ajijola, last week a case of rape was reported to the Neighbourhood Watch office at the council but when enquiries were made, the traditional ruler of Koloba was said to have denied that such a thing happened in his area.
She said a few days later, the former council chairman of Ayobo-Ipaja, Bisi Yusuf reported that the incident actually happened and that further investigation traced the rape case to the culprit, who was promptly arrested.
Ajijola added that the traditional ruler, Chief Babayanju, later opened up and admitted that the story was true, while eight children came forward to report that they were allegedly raped by Alo.
The vice chairman said the children were taken to the PHC in the area where tests were conducted on them and it was confirmed that the children had been defiled.
Two children of a community leader in the area were among the victims.
Chairman, Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA, Alhaji Shakiru Adisa Yusuf said he was shocked when he heard the story, adding that such a person is worse than an animal.
“I was shocked because I am also a parent. Why must he go after innocent children? Such people should not live in this community,” he said, adding that the council would pursue the case to ensure that justice was done.
“We will collect the tests conducted on the children and hand them over to the state government. We will pursue the case to a logical conclusion. This man has brought disgrace to this community,” he said.
Acting Director, Child Development, WAPA Ministry, Mrs Mosunmola Dada said the issue was disgusting, adding that such a man must be a paedophile and vowed that the government would ensure that he was prosecuted.
“We have evidences against him. The Ayobo-Ipaja LCDA has a medical report on this case. We will monitor and follow up this case,” she said.
The suspect, in his statement at the Ayobo Police Station, was said to have admitted that he raped some children, but that he only raped four and not eight.
P.M.NEWS could not get to him as he was in custody of the police, while the Divisional Police Officer, DPO of the station was not around for comments.
One of the victims, an eight years old girl (name withheld) told P.M.NEWS that the suspect told them to help him arrange newspapers in his apartment, adding that, “after that, he told us to go into the next room.
“He asked us to remove our panties and I asked him what he wanted to do to us. He laid me on the bed and defiled me four times. He covered our mouths with white handkerchief and threatened to kill us if we report,” she said.
Another victim, a 12 years old girl (name withheld) alleged that the suspect “licked my private part. He called me and my friend in. He asked me to bring N100 fufu for him, which I brought. While I was waiting for the money with my friend, he asked my friend whether she could keep a secret.
“He asked me to pull off my panties but I did not answer and he forced me and licked my private part while he slept with my friend and defiled her too. He gave us N50. I told my friend that I will tell my mummy, but he threatened to kill us if we told anybody.”

‘My soldier husband brutalised me, took my kids away’

Mrs Onuigbo in hospital
A woman, Maryrose Onuigbo, has urged the Nigerian Army authorities to prevail on her soldier husband, Kenneth Onuigbo, to reunite her with her children.
“I don’t want any other thing on earth apart from being reunited with my three children,” Maryrose said.
Maryrose told PUNCH Metro that Kenneth, an army sergeant attached to 81 Division, Lagos, was a hot-tempered man who brutalised her occasionally even when she was pregnant.
She said he brutalised her during an argument on June 23, 2012 after which she fell unconscious.
Maryrose said, “He left us for over two weeks without sending money for upkeep and he even prevented me from working even though I am a graduate. When the frustration became too much, I sent him a text message saying I would bring the kids to his office and report to his boss.
“He came home that evening and an argument ensued. He picked up an iron bucket and struck me in the head with it, making me to fall unconscious.
The graduate of Mass Communications from Enugu State University of Science and Technology said she was rushed to a hospital but before she was discharged, her husband had sent her children to an undisclosed location and denied her access to them.
She added that she had reported the matter to the military authorities but nothing had been done since then.
She said, “I was rushed to a military hospital after the assault but there were complications so I was transferred to a private hospital. My husband collected my phone and I was on admission for two weeks. No one contacted me and the hospital bill was accumulating. In fact, Kenneth abandoned me there.
“When I regained my strength, I reported to Col. Minimeh, the Commanding Officer, DARRR. He then directed the Military Police to handle the matter and Kenneth wrote an undertaking that he would pay the hospital bill which was about N150,000 and was detained.
“Brig. Gen. Yaki told Kenneth to bring the children back to Lagos and even gave him N10, 000 as transport fare. The Brig.Gen also gave me N10,000 to buy foodstuffs.”
Maryrose however said Kenneth returned after a week later without the children, saying that his family refused to release them.
She said she received phone calls from her in-laws that she would never see her children again.
However Kenneth refuted the allegations against him and accused his wife of infidelity.
Kenneth said he had paid the hospital bill, adding that his wife knew where the children were.
He said, “I paid the N150, 000 and I’ve told her to go and meet the children in my family’s place. We are still legally married and I’m the head of the family.
“I don’t even know where she is and this doesn’t speak well of a married woman. In fact, I will go to a police station and report her as a missing person.”
When asked why he did not bring his children back to Lagos despite being ordered by his boss to do so, Kenneth said his boss had no right to give such an order.
He said, “This is purely a family matter and the military authorities have no right to order me on how I should carry out my responsibilities as the head of the family.
“In fact, I have already written a petition against my boss for detaining me unlawfully and interfering in my private life.”
Meanwhile, Maryrose has approached a non-governmental organisation, Project Alert on Violence Against Women, to intervene.
The Director of the group, Dr. Josephine Effa-Chukwuma, said cases of domestic violence being perpetuated by security agents had risen in recent times.
“These cases are on the rise. Ironically, one of the army officers handling this matter is also guilty of domestic violence and his wife is also in our care. I think the army authorities need to look into this problem and make sure that errant officers are punished,” she said.
Chukwuma said her organisation had reported the matter to the army authorities but the case was dragging.
In a letter signed by the Major Eboh on behalf of the director of DARRR and addressed to Project Alert on Violence Against Women, the military authorities promised to give the matter full attention.
Similarly, the Public Relations Officer, 81 Division, Lt. Col. Kayode Ogunsanya, said he was handling the matter.
“The issue in question has been referred to me for further investigation and counselling,” he said.

Man set lover on fire

A 35-year-old lady yesterday told how her live-in lover poured fuel on her and set her ablaze in Ikotun area of Lagos State.

The lady, Janet Udegba, who spoke from her hospital bed in pains, said her lover, Mr. Kehinde Adesamuye, 39, set her on fire because he was angry and jealous over her relationship with other men.
Trouble between her and Adesamuye started penultimate Friday, but snowballed into a phase where the man stormed out of her shop, only to return moments later with a keg of fuel, which he poured on her as she was attending to a customer at the Ikotun roundabout bus stop, where she sells cooked indomie.
The fire from her cooking stove and bus lamp exploded as petrol splashed everywhere. Janet’s clothes and body were burnt.
As she screamed and rolled on the ground, trying to douse the raging flame, her lover, who is a motor park tout at the Ikotun round about, simply stared at her, hissed and walked away to buy and lit a stick of cigarette.

After a while, he left the scene.
The incident, which happened about 10p.m., attracted other night traders, who helped in dousing the flame on the body of the woman.
They rushed Janet to a hospital around Isheri area, where she was given First Aid.
The next morning, she was moved to Igando General Hospital due to the severe nature of the burnt.
When she got to Igando General Hospital, she was allegedly not attended to, even though she was weeping in pains.
Four hours after her arrival at the Hospital, she was told that there was no bed space.
She was again moved to ‘Peaceful Convalescent Centre Hospital,’ in Ejigbo.
In pains, Janet pleaded that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Lagos State government and a non-governmental organisation, ‘Project Alert-Violence Against Women’ not to allow Kehinde to go scot free for what he did to her.
Narrating the genesis of her predicament, the Delta State-born lady, said: “My husband has always been jealous. He used to beat me every time, under any guise and excuse.

I’ve tried several times to leave him, but he always threatens to harm me. I stayed with him because I was afraid of him and my life. He always told me that I could never escape from him, except I leave Lagos State. Anytime I said I was leaving him, he would say, no problem, but that he would do something to me which I would not forget. Now, see what he had done to me. He wanted to kill me.

“I used to sell indomie at Ikotun round about. There are other men and women selling there too. We’re all friends. Last two weeks Friday, one of the traders had a baby. We went for the naming ceremony. Kehinde was there with me. One of the traders gave me a drink; I just took a sip because I was in my flow.

“That was how it all started. He said I was kissing another man in his presence. He said that I sipped from the bottle that the man drank from. Right there, he started threatening that he was going to deal with me when we get home.

To be on the safe side, I called my younger sister, telling her that I might come over to spend the night at her place. I didn’t want him to beat me. When we got home, he cursed, abused and said all sort of things, but I didn’t respond or reply because I didn’t want him to pounce on me. This behavior continued till Saturday. He even kicked off the bed, but I didn’t mind. I slept on the floor.

When I woke up on Sunday, he had gone out. I rushed to take my bath because I wanted to leave the house before he came back. But he suddenly came back, and started beating me for no reason. He beat so much that I thought he was going to kill me. It was due to the intervention of our landlord that he left me. After that beating, I moved in with my younger sister.”

For reasons best known to Kehinde, he started sending friends to Janet’s shop, to beg on his behalf. He wanted her to forgive him and come back. But she refused.

ast week Tuesday, Kehinde came to the shop with another friend to beg once more, but Janet told him that she was through with the relationship.

Fuming, Kehinde jumped up from his seat, told her that he had nothing against leaving, but that he was going to show her. He made good the threat by dousing her.

The following day, Kehinde was arrested by policemen as he was strolling along the streets of Ikotun.

The Nigerian Compass learnt that Janet and Kehinde dated some years back, before they lost contact.

Friends, who the Nigerian Compass met at their hospital, insisted that it was even Kehinde who deflowered Janet.

In the ensuing years that they lost contact, both got married to different spouses. While Kehinde built a house in Lagos, married and has four kids, Janet married and divorced.
The lover later ran into each other and the second phase of the romance started.

About six months ago, Kehinde rented an apartment for Janet and she moved in. But even before she moved into the apartment, Kehinde was alleged to have always used her as his punching bag. The new apartment, however, seemed to fasten the ride of the relationship down the hills.

Janet told the Nigerian Compass that Kehinde also used to beat his wife.

He used to leave his wife and family for weeks to stay with her and whenever she implored him to go and check on them, he would turn ugly.

Her words: “Whenever I tell him to go and see his wife and children, he would say I was sending him away because I wanted to go and meet another man. Government should make sure Kehinde pays for what he did to me. I am an orphan. I have no father or mother. I sell indomie to make money and live. Now, I’ve spent all my money. In fact, I need help!”

Police spokesperson, Ngozi Braid, confirmed the incident, explaining: “The two of them had been living as husband and wife and had a misunderstanding. The man used substance on her, which we’re not sure of what it is. It is a mixture of some certain things.

But the man would be charged to the Ejigbo Magistrates Court tomorrow (today)”.
