A 34-year old man, Kehinde Paul Layode, has been arraigned before a family court in Ikeja for allegedly defiling a three-year old girl (name withheld).
The incident, which happened at 3/5, John Crescent, Igando, Lagos, wouthwest Nigeria, was reported at the Igando Police Station.
The accused, if found guilty, risks spending a minimum of five years in jail under the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.
According to the girl’s mother (name withheld) who spoke with P.M.NEWScorrespondents, Kehinde was one of her neighbours and she left her daughter in his custody to get drugs for the girl when the man allegedly took advantage of her.
•Kehinde Layode, the suspected rapist.
•Kehinde Layode, the suspected rapist.
“I was going to make my hair in the salon when I discovered that my daughter’s temperature was high and I told Kehinde’s wife to help me take care of her. But she asked me to leave her with her husband since she also wanted to make her hair and that we should go to the salon together.”
“It wasn’t up to ten minutes after I went to get the drugs for her that I returned to the house and asked Kenny (Kehinde) to open the door but he didn’t. Instead, he told me that the girl was sleeping, that I shouldn’t bother myself about her. Then I asked him to at least open the door for me to see my girl and he said that he was in the bathroom.”
The girl’s mother said she was shocked when the door was eventually opened and she discovered that the girl had been defiled.
“I insisted that he opened the door. At this point, my daughter was lying down on the bed but was not sleeping. I asked him why he told a lie but he did not respond. I only observed that my girl was looking rather disturbed.
“When I opened her pant out of suspicion to check her, I saw sperm in between her thighs. I got really mad at him and asked him what happened but he went really wild and told me that he did not do anything. ‘How could I have raped her?’ he asked me and when neighbours came around, they were also as surprised as I was,” she narrated.
The doctor’s report confirmed that the girl was defiled following the tests carried out on her.
It was also alleged that the accused had pleaded with the family to settle out of court but the girl’s family insisted that they wanted justice to prevail.
When the matter was initially taken to the magistrate’s court, he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail in the sum of N250, 000 with a surety and the matter was adjourned till Friday, 22 February, 2013.
However, the matter was tranferred to the family court. The court did not sit on 22 February and the matter was adjourned till 8 April, 2013.

This Woman Lost Her Pregnancy in the Hands of Lagos State KAI Officials

Nkechi Omakagu, the woman who lost her pregnancy after being detained by men of Kick Against Discipline, an enforcement unit of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, has written the state’s Attorney General, alleging abuse of her fundamental rights.
PUNCH Metro had reported on Thursday that Omakagu lost her six-month-old pregnancy after being detained by KAI men for eight hours for allegedly violating the environmental sanitation law. The law prohibits movement before 10am every last Saturday of the month.
In a petition signed by her lawyer, Lekan Alabi, the victim said she had no choice but to go to her hospital following intense pains she was experiencing in her stomach.
The statement read in part, “We are not under any illusion that movement of the people is usually restricted during the environmental sanitation. However, in a situation of proving emergency like in Nkechi’s case, movement is permitted, particularly for people who are seeking health care.
“For it is people who are alive that can observe environmental sanitation. Having compounded the health challenge of Nkechi, the vehicle which would have been used to convey her was equally impounded.”
PUNCH Metro had reported that the vehicle, with number plate BT292EPE, was still in KAI’s custody.
The petition stated that all attempts to get the vehicle back had proved abortive as KAI had refused to arraign Omakagu and Emeka Ozor, who drove the bus for the alleged violation of sanitation laws.
The petition added, “We went to the Magistrate’s Court to make an enquiry from the prosecutor about when they would be arraigned for the violation of the alleged environmental offence. When we arrived at the court on January 29, 2013 for arraignment, the prosecutor did not show up.
“Up till now, the state has not prosecuted the suspects in respect of the case.”
The victims stated that the continued detention of the said vehicle had caused huge financial loss as it was being used for the daily running of business.
The victim pleaded with the state government to intervene and make sure that the KAI men were brought to book.
“We have grave reservation for the lawlessness and recklessness of the KAI officials who have taken laws into their hands in one of the civilised states in Nigeria. We urge your prompt action on this unkind and uncivilised conduct of the KAI men,” Omokagu added.

She went in search of love but found death instead •Story of widow killed by her lover for money ritual

KAFILAT Lateef was a young woman of 36 years. Widowed five years ago and left with three children, she must have felt the absence of a companion which made her yield to the love overtures of Gbenga Taiwo, then a plank seller at Bodija market, Ibadan. Their paths had crossed over two years ago, as she was also a trader in foodstuffs at the same market.
Happy that she had found love again, Kafilat put in all she had into the relationship. Her family members were also happy that she was looking bright again. Putting her trust in the man she had had intimacy with several times since their relationship started, Kafilat did not think twice when Taiwo called her on January 19 , inviting her to Oyo town, where he had relocated since 2012. She returned to Ibadan on January 20 and went back to Oyo on January 21. He reportedly told her to come for the N50,000 he promised her.
Happy that she would be seeing her lover again, she went to Oyo, and when her sister called her later, she told her that she was with Taiwo at Idi Ope area of Oyo. She was given food and drinks, which she took with happiness, not knowing that she was drinking to her own death. Unknown to her, her drink had been laced with drug, which sent her to sleep, from where she slipped to death.
Information gathered from her lover, Taiwo, who had been arrested along with four others in connection with Kafilat’s death, revealed that immediately she became unconscious, the loverboy and his friends, Afeez Kareem and Lukman Ganiyu, who had already planned her death, clubbed her on the head with a digger, after which they put a kolanut in her mouth and buried her in a shallow grave already dug for the purpose.
The act was carried out in a house where Ganiyu was working as a security guard.
Sunday Tribune learnt that Taiwo was hellbent on becoming wealthy, not minding the means through which that would be achieved. He had reportedly approached an Islamic cleric, Mohammed Saheed, that he was interested in money ritual. Saheed claimed that he told Gbenga that he could not do such but gave him an alternative which could also yield money if done.
Saheed reportedly told him to put a kolanut in the mouth of the corpse of an elderly man or woman and bring it the following day after the kolanut must have dropped from the corpse’s mouth. To quicken the process, Gbenga decided to employ the services of prostitutes which he would kill to achieve his aim.
“However, when I approached prostitutes, I could not afford what they said I would pay if they should sleep in my house overnight. That was why I decided to make use of one of my numerous female friends,” Taiwo said. He further confessed that he tried two other lovers. He gave the names of his other lovers as Mama Iroko who came to him from Iroko, a surburb of Oyo town, and Mama Dada, a trader at Gbagi market whom he invited from Ibadan.
He disclosed that while Mama Iroko did not sleep after her drink was laced with drug, Mama Dada suspected his motive, especially when she noticed the shallow grave that was dug. According to him, “she did not sleep throughout the night and when it was daytime, she asked me whether it was good for me to think evil towards her. She left thereafter.”
Unfortunately, Kafilat became the victim, as she fell asleep after her drink was laced with drug. The following morning after she was buried, her suspected killers went to the graveside to take the kolanut as expected but to their consternation, there was none. They scrapped the earth off the remains and saw the kolanut still in the mouth of the corpse.
When the trio saw that their plan had not worked, they reportedly decided to dismember her remains after severing the head. They allegedly burnt the pieces and buried them in another shallow grave by a dumpsite behind the house where the dastardly act was committed. Taiwo confessed to the police that he took the head to a herbalist, one Adeyemi Adedokun a.k.a. Baba Agbadu to use it for money ritual for him.
Adedokun, however, denied being given the head, though he admitted that Taiwo brought the head to his house.
Also, Mohammed Saheed from Ilesa-Baruba  in Kwara State, whom Taiwo alleged to have asked him to bring kolanut, denied telling him to kill someone, saying he was only tring to help. Saheed, who said he was a Quranic teacher, told Sunday Tribune, that Taiwo came to him for money ritual but claimed that he told him he was not into such things.
Saheed added that Taiwo also brought his friends Afeez and Lukman, who also wanted to do charms for authority and favour respectively.
According to Saheed, “I told him what our forefathers used to do with kolanut from the mouth of an elderly dead person, saying that if this is done, it would be found by the graveside by the following day.
“ I also told him that the deceased’s spirit would try to resist the kolanut being taken but if it could be forcefully taken, it would be used for a charm that would be bringing any fortune from wherever one may want.
“Three days after, he came back with  the kolanut but told me that he did not find the kolanut by the graveside, so he had to exhume the corpse to take it.
“I sent him away that I would not be involved in such a thing because I had already told him that the kolanut should not be used on exhumed corpse, an accident victim or someone deliberately murdered.”
Sunday Tribune further gathered that Taiwo was a wanted suspect in Oyo State Police Command in relation with cases of robbery in which he was involved. He was said to have abandoned his wife and only child, relocating to Oyo from Ibadan immediately he knew there was a manhunt for him.
Police sources aslo told Sunday Tribune that Taiwo’s father had already disowned him as a result of the robbery cases he was allegedly involved in, unknown to him that he would still commit another crime. The father, Mr Joseph Taiwo, is said to be the pastor of God’s Foundation Church at Jakan area of Agbowo, Ibadan.
The Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku who is currently investigating the case, Mrs Janet Agbede, told Sunday Tribune that policemen comprising of Oyo SARS operatives, detectives from CID and Durbar Division set to work when Kafilat’s family reported the case of their missing relation, after efforts  to locate Kafilat proved abortive. The family members had told the police that two days after Kafilat left for her lover’s place in Oyo, her line was not going through.
They added that they later received a call from Kafilat’s line telling them that she had an accident in Lagos and was hospitalised in a general hospital but was disappointed when all efforts  to locate Kafilat in any Lagos hospital proved abortive.
Describing the act of the suspects as callous and despicable, Mrs Agbede, advised women to be wary of men they regard as lovers so that they would not fall victim to evil-minded persons.
Sunday Tribune gathered that a pathologist has told police that the charred remains of the deceased would have to be taken abroad for autopsy and DNA. The cost was put at N1 million.

Face-to-face with a killer

Face-to-face with a killer
…How my sister’s jilted lover shot me -–Twin sister
By THERESA ONWUGHALU
Lying on her hospital bed and staring into space, Miss Katherine Ijedinma, couldn’t fathom out how she escaped from gunshot fired by the 27-year-old man (name withheld), who stormed her and gunned down everyone on Saturday, February 16.
The man, a native of Imo State, visited the homes of Mr and Mrs Henry Ekene Ozor and that of Mr and Mrs Odia at Igando, Lagos, at night and shot his victims in cold blood over his relationship with Sandra, Katherine’s twin sister which her parents did not approve of. The thought of the incident that led to the brutal killing of at least seven family members gave the young lady of 24, a frightful look.
Narrating her experience, Katherine said: “We were at home when a man jumped the fence into the compound. Everyone was shouting Ole! Ole! (thief, thief). I checked and it was the guy that was dating my twin sister and he was carrying a gun. I was asking him what are you doing here and he asked us to go inside, I was carrying my aunt’s baby. “He said I was the one that asked my twin sister not to marry him.
I told him that I wasn’t the one but before I knew what was happening, he asked me to raise my clothes up that he wanted to shoot at my belly. Fearfully, I lifted my clothes up. He aimed the gun at me and as he was about shooting, I jumped up and I didn’t know what happened again.” Waking up on the hospital bed, Katherine saw that it was her thigh that the bullet hit. According to her, the man carried a big gun, aimed at her stomach and shot.
On who the alleged killer was, Katherine said: “I don’t know how my twin sister met the guy but all I know is that they were friends and the guy lived in Warri, Delta State.” Right now, Katherine, who is grateful to God that the suspect didn’t kill her doesn’t even know that her twin, two elder sisters and children whom the man later shot are in the morgue. Also, the world of Mr Ozor has suddenly collapsed with the gruesome murder of his eight-month pregnant wife, elder sister to Katherine and others.
Since the incident, Ozor said he had not eaten any food except water. Ozor, who described the whole scene as terrible, said he had never seen anything like that before. “They said my wife tried to run away but this man pursued her and shot thrice at her. I have been trying to transfer the corpses, but it is not easy. I don’t know how I manage to do all the work that I do, going from one ward to the other to attend to them and to other places. It is only by God’s strength.
“I have refused to think about the whole scenario because I don’t know where to start from. Right now the aged parents of the deceased in Igbodo, Delta State, are yet to be notified on the death of their three children and four grandchildren. The suspected killer, whose first point of call was the Ozors, shot Sandra, his girlfriend; Katherine, his girl friend’s twin sister; Mrs Ozor, Sandra’s elder sister; Mrs. Ozor’s first daughter, Happiness and second daughter, Bethel.
While others died on the spot, Katherine and Bethel survived and were rushed to an undisclosed hospital. Three-year-old Miss Victory was spared. After that, the killer went to the home of the Odias and killed Mrs Ngozi Odia, eldest sister to the girlfriend and her three children including Angela, 12; Chidinma, 10 and Chinenye, eight years old. The suspect is still on the run but since then he has allegedly been threatening Mr. Ozor through calls.

My fiance poured hot stew on me – Woman

Mary Sunday before and after the incident
A 27-year-old woman, Mary Sunday, has been in the hospital bed at Igbobi Orthopaedic Hospital seven months after she was allegedly attacked by her fiancé, Corporal Isaac Gbanwuan, with a pot of boiling stew and a lighted stove.
It was learnt that Sunday had lost her ears due to the attack.
Before the attack, which took place in August 2012, Sunday, was to report for training at the Police Academy, Kano as a cadet officer.
Still nursing severe burns to  her neck, chest and upper arms, Sunday can barely sit or walk straight. She holds her head stiffly and talks with difficulty as she recalled the events that led to her present state to PUNCH Metro on Wednesday.
She said, “I have known Gbanwuan for a while, while I was still a student at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, but it wasn’t until our marriage introduction in 2011 that I moved in with him at the Pedro Police Barracks, Lagos.
“On the day I was assaulted, Gbanwuan and I went to see our doctor. We had some health issues. While we were on our way back home, I made a phone call. Immediately we got home, Gbanwuan started querying me. He accused me of keeping lovers and claimed the person I called was my lover.
“I tried to explain to him that it was my sister I called, but Gbanwuam was not listening. He began to beat me,” Sunday said.
Unable to take it any more, Sunday said she ran into the kitchen of a neighbour with Gbanwuan giving pursuit. He allegedly broke into the kitchen where he continued to assault Sunday.
She said, “Then to the horror of those who tried to intervene, Gbanwuan seized his neighbour’s cooking stove on which was a pot of boiling stew, emptying the entire contents on me.
“I don’t know for how long I was unconscious but I was later told that I was in a coma for seven days. I learnt the stove also exploded after Gbanwuan threw it with the boiling soup at me.
“I was first rushed to a private hospital at Bariga before I was eventually transferred to Igbobi hospital.
“I couldn’t tell my family for a while because I could not use my hands; they were sort of stuck to my chest. It was after much treatment, that I was able to use my hands and call my family.”
Sunday’s lawyer, Mr. Moses Kassim, told PUNCH Metro that a petition had already been sent to the Police Provost Office and the Commissioner of Police.
He said, “We have still not received any response from either of them. Gbanwuan is yet to be arrested despite the fact that Sunday’s family reported the case at the Pedro Police Division.
“While Sunday is confined to a hospital bed, Gbanwuan is still at his duty post at the Ebutte Ero division, showing no concern for her condition.”
Copies of the acknowledged petition received by the Provost Office and Commissioner of Police were dated January 17, 2013.
When PUNCH Metro contacted Gbanwaun, he denied causing any harm to his fiancée.
He said, “What Sunday has told you are all lies. She has been going about saying all sorts of things about me.
“That is how she wrote a petition through her lawyer to the Lagos State Police Command. Anyway, the matter is already being investigated by the command.”
When our correspondent  sought his opinion on how Sunday got her injury that had kept her in the hospital, the policeman said, “I don’t know what to tell you. Like I said, the matter is being investigated.
The Lagos Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Damascus Ozoani, said he was yet to be fully briefed on the issue.
He said, “I don’t have all the facts right now. Let me investigate and I will respond to the story.”
But Sunday said she was more concerned with getting well.
She said, “All I want is the money to treat myself. My doctors are afraid to tell me how much because they don’t want me to be worried, but I have overhead them discussing several times.
“There is a deep wound in my chest which has to be treated and then my neck has to be operated on because it has been stiff since the incident and then there is the matter of my upper arms.
“The doctor, who attended to me at the first hospital I went to in Bariga, told me that I would have to go to India to have my ears reconstructed because they melted. He said I would need N5m.
“Gbanwaun’s family has abandoned me. They did so immediately my family reported the matter to the police. My mother is dead and my father is aged. Coping with my daily treatment here is a struggle for my siblings.”

Rapists to face life imprisonment under new law – Reps

ABUJA — Chairman,  House Committee on Human Rights, Hon. Beni Lar, said, Wednesday, that rapists would face life imprisonment once the current Violence Against Persons Bill becomes law.
Lar, who made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Abuja, said the National Assembly had decided to expedite action on the passage of the bill, considering the increasing prevalence of rape in the country.
She pointed out that the bill would not only protect rape victims but equally provide protection for victims of violence including physical, sexual, psychological, domestic, harmful traditional practices and discrimination.
She said: “My only concern is that in our laws today, the punishment for rape is very light and that is why you find people committing rape against children. It’s unfortunate.
“It is because of issues like this that it has come to the attention of the National Assembly that we have the Violence Against Persons Bill.
“It is a bill that seeks to eliminate violence in private and public life, to prohibit all forms of violence including physical, sexual, psychological, domestic, harmful traditional practices, discrimination against persons and provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims and punishment for offenders.
“Part one of this bill, which has passed second reading in the House, defines a rapist as one who intentionally violates another person and the conviction for this offence is life imprisonment.
“The National Assembly is seeking to stiffen punishment for rape because the punishment has been so light. People feel they can do it easily and get away with it but once this bill is passed you would think twice before committing rape because they can go to jail for life.“
Law won’t exempt couples caught in  act of rape
The chairman stressed that the law would not exempt couples caught in the act of rape, adding that women deserve their respect and right to life.
She called on friends and relatives of victims of domestic violence as well as victims themselves to break the culture of silence by reporting rape cases.
She said the law could only take full course when cases of rape were reported to law enforcement agencies, particularly the Police.
Lar urged people to desist from the stigmatisation of victims, adding that stigmatisation is largely responsible for the culture of silence.
She also said that people always take advantage of the culture of silence to rape those related to them, adding: “It would no longer be business as usual with the passage of the law.
“Why we have an increase in this violence is because we have a culture of silence. Most of the people that commit acts of violence against women are people that are known to women.
“For instance, domestic violence, it is either your spouse, or in cases of rape, especially the rape of infants, it’s mainly people around them, their guardians, their wards, so-called family friends and people who are known to them.
“All of these contribute to increase in cases of violence but I’m happy that now women are beginning to speak out.
On soldiers who raped  4 women
“For instance, the recent case that happened in Abuja where unidentified soldiers raped about four different women, one of them being a married woman for no reason at all.
“First of all those soldiers were not even mandated to pick up so-called prostitutes. That was not within their mandate. They were posted on a different assignment somewhere and they decided to be mischievous and of course their target was women.
“I am very happy that they did not get away with it. Right now they are facing trial in a court of law. “They’ve been dismissed from the army because they went beyond their duty and if they are found to be guilty by the court, of course they would face the punishment.”
